Biography
Maya Erin Masuda, is a queer artistic researcher based in Rotterdam and Berlin. Her practice engages cyborg ecosystems, disobedient desire, and queer ecologies. From the circulation of artificial milk, contaminated plants to artificial skin, her time-based, spatial narratives work with various non-human subjects to sensually confront the technological biopolitical violence which permeates human and non-human bodies alike. Investigating how large-scale governing systems, such as chemical infrastructure, colonial or bodily extraction, infiltrate organic boundaries like skin, milk and membranes, Maya traces molecular intimacy which reveal the ambivalent nature of ecological interconnectedness.
Thus in Maya's work, departing from her personal narratives and views on queer reproduction, hormonal therapy and gender normativity, she speculates alternative forms of interspecies solidarity as an act of care and resistance. Informed by queer theories, she further explores the themes of toxicity, inflammation and non-normative desire, embracing deviated and abjected forms of belonging that nagates regressionist narratives.
Her practice encompasses a wide range of fields such as curation, publishing and activism. She was a curator of Kyoto Art Centre CO-program 2023, writes critiques on Tokyo Art Beat, and also works as the co-founder of the feminist-queer journal i+med(i/e)a. After obtaining her MA from the Royal College of Art (UK), she currently researches
post-nuclear culture in relation to reproductive futurity
at Universität der Künste Berlin (DE). She gives lectures on Queer Ecologies at varoius art institute. Her recent solo exhibitions include Ecologies of Closeness (YCAM, 2025, JP), Sleep, Lick, Leak, Deep… (Daiwa Japan Foundation London, 2024,UK), curation includes Ground Zero (Kyoto Art Center, JP, 2023), group exhibiitons includes Transmediale 2025(Haus der Kulturen der Welt, 2025, DE),
Constructing Utopia (Gallery XY Olomouc,2023,CZ)and so on.
