Biography
Maya Erin Masuda, is a Berlin/Tokyo/London-based, queer interdisciplinary artist. As a speculative design facilitator, she has brought her ecological intersubjectivities to life through storytelling via film, performance, writing and time-based installations. Throughout her work, she delicately poses techno-biological questions by probing various planetary traumas and chemical infrastructures, seen in spatiotemporally diverse sites such as nuclear catastrophes.
Born in Japan, where the nuclear disaster occurred in 2011, she grew up witnessing the
ambivalent nature of techno-ecological interconnectedness and proximity. This upbringing, combined with her background in machine engineering and in science, enabled her to become aware of the reality of molecular biopolitics, as well as the uneven distribution of environmental / health capital that is accelerated through the implementation of contemporary technologies. Consequently, as an artist with particular focus on ecological intimacy, she’s been aiming to propose affective, sensual, intimate sites of knowledge production which interweave the non-human, the marginalized and the symbolic. Developing a kinship with the imperfect and political nature of technology, she work attempts to provide interspecies belonging and care as well as reparative attention across beings, while suggesting an alternative future that rejects anthropocentrism.
Her practice encompasses a wide range of fields such as curation, publishing and activism. She was a curator of Kyoto Art Centre CO-program 2023, writes critiques on Tokyo Art Beat, also works as the co-founder of the feminist-queer journal i+med(i/e)a. After Obtaining her MA from Royal College of Art (UK), she currently researches post-nuclear culture in relation to the reparative process of planetary trauma at Freie Universität Berlin (DE) and Universität der Künste Berlin (DE). Her recent exhibitions include Transmediale 2025(Haus der Kulturen der Welt, 2025, DE), Sleep, Lick, Leak, Deep… (Daiwa Japan Foundation London, 2024,UK), Ground Zero (Kyoto Art Center, JP, 2023),Constructing Utopia (Gallery XY Olomouc,2023,CZ)and so on.
